Human Geography

This is a compulsory Level 1 module for all BA and BSc Geography students.

Aims

Level 1 Human Geography introduces core concepts in human geography, n particular, Space & Place, Nature, Landscapes and Home. Students will learn about the various approaches human geographers use to understand and develop these concepts in response to specific societal challenges. The module also showcases how research currently being undertaken by members of the Geography Department make use of these and other such key concepts in order to understand and intervene in contemporary debates and societal challenges.

Module Structure

The module is organised around weekly lectures, and complemented by small group tutorials (two tutorial sessions in Term 1 and two tutorial sessions in Term 2). The tutorials provide students the opportunities to demonstrate their comprehension of module content, to evaluate evidence, synthesise information, and communicate complex information. A dedicated essay writing workshop helps develop writing skills.

Assignments & Assessment

Online 24 hour unseen examination (50%)

1 summative essay max 4 sides A4 (50%)

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment takes the form a formative essay, with further formative feedback on tutorials assignments, tutorial discussions and a writing workshop.

Summative assessment is 50% coursework (analytical essay) and 50% exam at the end of the year.
